3rd Graders Given Dictionaries

Every year for the past 18 years, the Kiwanis Club of Minisink Valley has gone into the two elementary schools in the Minisink Valley School District to give every third-grade student a personal dictionary.

The Kiwanians are able to go into the individual classrooms handing out the dictionaries, giving the class a quick lesson on how to use a dictionary, along with a short history lesson on Noah Webster.  It took Noah 22 years to collect over 70,000 words and their meanings to finish his dictionary.

"We loved seeing students enjoying looking up various words to find their meaning, part of speech and spellings," said Principal Julia Downey. "We are grateful to our Kiwanis friends for visiting and showing our students how valuable a dictionary is, especially in this digital age."

This year eleven members were able to attend the schools and give the lessons. Mary Jo Wagner, President Hank Potter, Jim Burtis, Logan Reggio, Andrea Yager, Cindy Matteson, Nancy Komonczi, Grace White, Lauren Reggio, Chris Reggio, and David Morse.
