Obstacles Don't Stop Food Drive

club news

Early Saturday morning, President Barbara Macchiaroli began to unload her SUV with items needed for the scheduled food drive in front of Walbaums. The day was warm and sunny and the store was already abuzz with activity. With the help of a young volunteer named Kyle who needed community service hours, it wasn't long before things were set up and ready to receive food donations to benefit the newly opened Long Island Cares Harry Chapin Food Pantry of Huntington Station.

Out of the blue, a group of musicians began setting up their equipment about 20 feet away. Apparently they had volunteered to play to support another food pantry in the community that desperately needed replenishment. How could this happen?

After a discussion with the store manager, Barbara produced the paperwork submitted to the store proving Huntington Kiwanis had the right date but apparently there was a mix up and two different groups were assigned the same day. What now????

Well Kiwanians are giving people. The shoppers were extremely generous, the food cartons from Long Island Cares were filled to the brim, the band was playing, many club volunteers lent a hand, and the sun continued to shine. At the end of the day all the food that had been collected was shared with the other group.

After all we were all helping those in need - that's what Kiwanians do.
