Monticello Gives Books to Second Graders

Several members of the Kiwanis Club of Monticello recently visited and delivered books to the second grade classes at Monticello Central School District.

The books were selected by Kiwanian Doris Motl, who is a retired 4th grade teacher.  Accompanying her to the schools were Ellen Nesin (retired Kindergarten teacher and former school board member), Jane Sorensen (Kiwanis Vice President and EPIC Program Manager for the school district), Sheila Lashinsky (Kiwanis Public Relations Chairperson) and Martha Johnson, Kiwanis member and former school board member.

It was shared with the students that the word "Kiwanis" is borrowed from a Native American phrase "Nunc Kee-wanis" meaning "we trade".  Each student was encouraged to take his/her book home and read it over the summer and after reading it, to share -- or "trade" it -- with friends and family in order to expand their reading material.

One class plans to invite kindergarten students to visit their classroom so that they can read their books to them.
