The Kiwanis clubs of Monticello and Woodridge are the co-sponsors of the newly formed and chartered Aktion Club of Sullivan County.

The club is made up of adults with disabilities who are affiliated with SullivanARC, New Hope Community and Center for Discovery. Some of the benefits these members receive from participating in the Aktion Club are the opportunity to contribute to the community, develop social interaction awareness, improve their self-esteem and develop leadership skills.

They are in the process of selecting fundraisers and picking service projects for the coming year.

Charter Night July 23 was a big celebration at the SullivanARC site on Cimarron Road in Monticello. The multi-purpose room was filled with Aktion Club charter members along with agency advisors and family members. Also in attendance were various Kiwanis Clubs in the Hudson River West Division, including Monticello, Woodridge, Chester, Middletown and Minisink.

Jane Sorensen and Sue Kasofsky, presidents of the Monticello and Woodridge Kiwanis clubs, respectively, welcomed the guests and presented the charter and gifts to the Aktion Club. Hudson River West Division Lt. Gov. Gerda Krogslund installed the officers, describing their duties and presenting them with a certificate of membership. This was followed by each of the 14 new members receiving their pin and certificate. Krogslund told the inductees "as first members of this Aktion Club, you are a very special group."

Newly installed President Tommy Abelson conducted the first meeting Aug. 18 at SullivanARC. He enjoyed ringing the bell and banging the gavel at the beginning and the end while maintaining order throughout the meeting. The other officers are Vice President Jamal Saad, Secretary Evelyn McAdoo and Treasurer Stanley Zulanch. The Board of Directors consists of Leonard Ashworth, Helena Gilliard, Deborah Gollomp and Steven Saunders.

"It is very gratifying to see the new Aktion Club members excited about doing community service in the future to help others," Kasofsky said. Jane Sorensen added "the collaboration between Monticello and Woodridge Kiwanis clubs with SullivanARC, Center for Discovery and New Hope Community has been so rewarding and we are elated to be able to offer meaningful and enriching opportunities to our new Aktion Club members to serve and give back to the community."

The Aktion Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the SullivanARC site in Monticello. For further information contact Regina McKenny Snead, SullivanARC Associate Exec. Director/Aktion Club Advisor at (845) 796-1350 x1001.
