Winter Sports Challenge and Classic is Feb. 14

On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks will sponsor the 15th annual Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge and 4th Annual McCauley Mountain Snowshoe Classic. The snowshoe and ski events will be held at McCauley Mountain Ski Area in Old Forge.

The first event will be the recreational cross-country ski and snowshoe fund raising event at 1K and 2.5K. If you wish to do 5 K you will be able to complete the 2.5K course two times.

The second event, in cooperation with Mountainman Outdoor Supply, will be the McCauley Mountain Snowshoe Classic which is an 6K snowshoe race. Course distances will be subject to snow conditions. Prizes for the male and female sanctioned races will be; 1st Place, $200; 2nd Place, $50 and $50 Gift Certificate from Mountainman and 3rd Place, $25 Cash and $25 Gift Certificate from Mountainman.

The proceeds of the Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge will be used to fund all of the Kiwanis Youth oriented projects including operations of Kommunity Youth and Activity Center (KYAC) in Old Forge. Kiwanis members are currently seeking Corporate Sponsors for this exciting winter event. Corporate Sponsorships are available at $200 Gold, $150 Silver and $100 Bronze.  All sponsors will be mentioned in all event publicity.

The registration for the McCauley Mountain Classic race is 8:30 AM to 9:45 AM

You, your organization or company can create an event team and solicit individual sponsors to contribute funds for your participation in one of the events at the Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge. You may promise to perform a one-mile or five-mile tour of the Snowshoe, Cross-country Ski trails at McCauley Mountain.

Registration for the McCauley Mountain Snowshoe Classis will bet 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. at Yurt A on the day of the race or online at www.runreg.com/mccauleysnowshoe. Race entry fee is $15. The race will begin at 10 a.m.

Registration for the Winter Sports Challenge snowshoe/cross-country ski event will be from 8:30-11 a.m. at Yurt B. Rented snowshoes will be available from Matt Westerlund. They are racing snowshoes he has from Dion Racing Snowshoes. Participants may complete the course from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

All who register will receive a raffle ticket for a DOOR PRIZE DRAWING.  The No. 1 Fundraising Team will receive a Traveling Plaque and Permanent Certificate, the No. 2. Fundraising Team a Permanent Certificate and the No. 1 Fundraising Individual a Permanent Certificate and $50. In addition, this year the top fundraiser 18 or under will receive an award of $100.

A Kiwanis Committee consisting of President Mike Griffin, Past President Bill Ransom, Bill Baumann, Dick Olson and Bob Teesdale is organizing the event.
