The Monticello Kiwanis Club recently held its holiday party. In lieu of exchanging gifts, the members opted to bring an unwrapped toy or game that would be donated to United Way of Sullivan County for distribution to local children in need.

In addition, at their prior meeting, the club, as well as individual Kiwanis members, donated money to be used by the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School Builders Club for purchasing items for the United Way Project Care Program.

The Builders Club members donned Christmas caps and reindeer antlers and traveled by school bus to Walmart where they picked out items that someone in their age range (12-14) would enjoy since they were advised that there was a need for toys and craft items for that age category. They were accompanied by Builders Club Advisor William Oefelein, Kiwanis Club President and Builders Club Liaison Jane Sorensen, as well as Kiwanis members Sheila Lashinsky and Pat Monteverde. The students did a spectacular job selecting their purchases considering they only had twenty minutes to pick out the items, pay for them and get back on the bus to proceed to the United Way Building.

Kaytee Warren of the United Way was thrilled to receive both the toy donations from the Kiwanis members as well as all the purchases by the Builders Club, and the Builders Club members were thrilled to pose for pictures with all their donations and to enjoy birthday cupcakes and beverages. Ms. Warren thanked everyone for their generosity to assure that no child is forgotten during the holiday season.
