On Nov. 2 the KPTC Service Leadership Committee held an International Cook-Off and Talent Show at Levittown Hall. The event which featured a buffet of 22 different dishes from cultures around the world. Entrees ranged from Irish soda bread to Pakora from India including desserts such as Italian Amaretti cookies, American Chocolate Lasagna and German Rumkugeln.
Winners of the cook-off were selected by guests making donations to KPTC in boxes designed for each dish. The Best Appetizer trophy went to Long Island South Central Division Lt. Gov.-Elect Charlie Cronin for his Irish soda bread, Best Entrée was awarded to Lisa Santer for her Tortellini Alfredo while “Best Dessert” went to Adrienne Passariello for her Italian Amaretti cookies. Overall, Best Dish went to Past Lt. Gov. Ann Torcivia for her Spanish chicken and rice.
The performances of the talent show portion of the event were also culturally diverse. Acts included a semi-classical Indian dance, a vocal cover of the Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction from the United Kingdom, an Irish step dance and a Latin American dance.
Like the cook-off winners, talent show winners were selected by the audience by the donations made in each acts collection box. A tie for Best Act with a High School or College Student awarded trophies to Irish stepper Laura Glynn of Massapequa High School and Indian dancer Yesha Desai of East Meadow High School. The People’s Choice Award went to vocalist Maura McGovern for the Bethpage Kiwanis Club.
Assisting with the event were associates from Kohl’s Department Store. Under Kohl’s Associates in Action program. Kohl’s employees volunteer at registered 501(c)3 charity events. When 5 or more associates from a single store volunteer at an event, Kohl’s Cares provides a $500 grant to the charity.
While the attendance at the event was a little disappointing, admission raised over $500 and voting donations provided another $500. Another $1,000 was provided by the Kohl’s grants. Thanks to Kohl’s the event was a financial success raising $2,000 to support the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
