The Kiwanis Club of Southwest Rochester decided to 'kick it up a notch' and make the One Day volunteer effort into three days of helping in the community.

On Friday, April 4, there was a collection of canned goods for the local food shelf. The drive was held outside WalMart in Gates. Club Vice President Dave Huddleston was soaked through from standing out in the cold rain, but that didn't stop his enthusiasm as he cheerily thanked everyone for helping to fill a shopping cart with canned goods.

Saturday, April 5 took club members to the Open Door Mission, a place for homeless or down on the luck folks to get a warm meal in the evening. Members prepped the dessert and filled plates with meat, rice and vegetables. About seventy people were served and given seconds after all were served. The group then pitched in to clean up. Club Treasurer Sue Przybyla said, "Even though we were serving food, we got so much out of the experience."

The final weekend event was welcoming back Rochester's Honor Flight at the airport. The members clapped and cheered as the World War II and Korean War Veteran's returned home after touring the monuments to their service in Washington, DC. Kiwanian Laura Larson shared that the event touched her heart. Club Secretary Chrissy Bucklin, a nurse, went on the trip as a member of the safety team. She said, "No matter how hard you work or how tired you get, this is one thing I would do again in an instant. It is one of the best experiences of my life."
